iPhone took a swim? The first 60 seconds matter more than everything that follows
A short, calm checklist for the first minute after a phone gets wet. Rice does not work, charging it is worse, and there’s exactly one thing that helps. Read this before you do anything else.
Most water-damaged phones we receive could have been saved. Most of the ones we can’t save weren’t killed by the water, they were killed in the panic that followed. So before anything else: read this, do these things in order, and then call us. Don’t experiment.
Why those three things, in that order
Water by itself is rarely what kills a phone. What kills it is electrical current passing through wet circuitry, that’s when traces corrode, components short, and the damage becomes permanent. Powering off cuts the current. Charging restores it, which is why so many “my phone got wet but worked fine” stories end with the phone dying the next morning.
The window where rinsing, drying and ultrasonic cleaning can fully recover a phone is roughly 24 hours. After that, corrosion starts setting in even if the phone is bone-dry on the outside.
The rice myth (please stop)
Rice does not dry electronics. It absorbs ambient moisture from the air, slowly, while sealed water sits inside your phone shorting things out. Rice is the digital equivalent of leaving the patient in the waiting room overnight. It feels productive. It isn’t.
Same goes for hair dryers (the heat damages adhesives and screens), silica gel (also too slow), and the freezer (you’ll add condensation). There’s no household trick that beats opening the device and ultrasonic-cleaning the board.
What actually happens at the shop
When a wet phone comes in, here’s the order on our bench:
- Open the device, remove the battery, photograph the board for reference.
- Disassemble shielding and disconnect each component.
- Ultrasonic-clean the logic board and removed parts in 99% isopropyl.
- Dry, inspect under a microscope for corrosion, address any failed components.
- Reassemble, power up under current-limited conditions, then a real battery test.
Most jobs are done in 1–3 days. Data is recovered first whenever possible, even if the phone doesn’t survive, we can usually get your photos and messages off. Water-damage work is no-fix / no-fee at our shop, so if your phone is genuinely beyond saving, you don’t pay for the diagnostic time.
Salt water vs. fresh water vs. coffee
Salt water is much more aggressive than fresh, chloride attacks copper traces fast, so the urgency triples. Coffee and sugary drinks leave a sticky residue that bridges contacts long after the liquid is gone, which is why a “dried” Coke spill can fail a week later. Pure water (rain, pool) is gentler but still demands a proper clean within the day.
