The first steps after a spill can affect what happens next. Once the phone is off and unplugged, avoid testing or charging it. We can assess whether liquid reached the inside and explain the repair options.
Why those three things, in that order
Liquid can damage connectors and circuits, especially when current passes through wet parts. Powering off and avoiding charging reduce that risk. A phone that still works after a spill may still need an inspection if liquid got inside.
There is no fixed recovery window. The type and amount of liquid, the path it took and any continued use all affect the outcome. Earlier assessment gives us more options.
The rice myth (please stop)
Rice does not reliably remove liquid from inside a phone, and loose grains can enter the connector. Keep the device unplugged. If it was only a wet connector, airflow may help it dry; if liquid reached the inside, have it assessed.
Avoid a hair dryer, compressed air or anything inserted into the connector. A technician can inspect for internal liquid and decide whether disassembly and cleaning are needed.
What actually happens at the shop
When a wet phone comes in, here’s the order on our bench:
- Open the device, remove the battery, photograph the board for reference.
- Disassemble shielding and disconnect each component.
- Ultrasonic-clean the logic board and removed parts in 99% isopropyl.
- Dry, inspect under a microscope for corrosion, address any failed components.
- Reassemble, power up under current-limited conditions, then a real battery test.

Salt water vs. fresh water vs. coffee
Salt water can corrode contacts quickly. Coffee and sugary drinks can leave residue. Rainwater and pool water can also carry contaminants. Whatever the liquid, turn the phone off, keep it unplugged and seek an assessment if it may have entered the device.

Frequently asked questions
No. Rice can leave particles in the connector and does not reliably dry liquid inside a phone. Keep the phone unplugged and allow airflow around it. If liquid entered the device or it behaves abnormally, have it assessed promptly.
Do not power it on just to test it or plug it in while it may still be wet. Turn it off if you can, disconnect accessories and get it checked if liquid may have entered the device.
There is no reliable cutoff. The liquid, how far it travelled and whether the phone was powered all matter. Act promptly, especially after salt water or a sugary drink, and do not charge a wet phone.
