It starts with the fan. A PS5 that used to be quiet begins to roar a few minutes into a game, the case feels hot, and then one night the screen goes black and the console switches itself off. Overheating is one suspect, not the only one. Here is what causes it, what you can safely fix yourself tonight, and when it needs a bench.
Why does a PS5 overheat or shut itself off?
A PS5 pushes a lot of heat through a small box. Sony’s design pulls cool air in, runs it across a large heatsink with a 120 mm fan, and pushes the hot air out the back. When any part of that path is blocked, the chip runs hotter, the fan spins faster to compensate, and past a certain point the console shuts down on purpose to protect itself.
Four things we check when investigating overheating:
- Dust and debris. Pet hair, lint and carpet fluff build up on the intake and fan blades until the air can’t get through.
- The fan. A fan that has slowed down or isn’t spinning properly can’t move enough air, however clean the console is.
- Thermal contact. The PS5 uses liquid metal between its processor and heatsink. A problem with that contact can affect cooling even when the fan is clean. It needs assessment before servicing.
- Placement. A console boxed into a TV cabinet, pushed against a wall or sitting on thick carpet recycles its own hot air.
When we open an overheating console on our bench, it is often more than one of these at once. Sometimes a proper clean is all it needs. Other times the fan isn’t working the way it should, or the thermal interface needs servicing.
One thing that isn’t a fault: Sony says the fan will temporarily speed up during some games to cool the system. A fan that gets louder under load and settles down afterwards is normal. A fan that is loud all the time, or a console that shuts off, is not. And a PS5 that shuts off the moment it starts, or won’t power on, needs its power and board checked as well as its cooling system, which is a job for our PlayStation repair bench.
Check the placement first: Sony’s 10 cm rule
Before you open anything, look at where the console lives. Sony’s own support guidance is specific:
- Keep at least 10 cm of free space on each side of the console.
- Make sure the vents on the sides and back aren’t blocked.
- Don’t set it on a carpet or rug with long fibres.
- Don’t put it in a narrow or cramped space, like a closed cabinet shelf.
Standing it upright or lying it flat doesn’t matter much. What matters is the space around it. Either way, use the appropriate feet or stand for your PS5 model so it sits stable and the vents stay clear. If your PS5 lives in a closed cabinet, try running it in the open for a few evenings. If the shutdowns stop, you’ve found your answer for free.
How to clean a PS5 safely at home
Sony designed the PS5 so the worst of the dust can be cleared without taking it apart. Under the white side covers are two dust catchers, small openings where dust collects so you can vacuum it out. Here is the safe version:
- Shut the console down fully (not rest mode) and unplug the power cable.
- Lay it on a soft, clean surface and remove the side covers by hand. Check PlayStation’s support pages for the steps on your model.
- Use a low-powered vacuum on the air vents and the two dust catchers. That is Sony’s own recommendation.
- Stick with the vacuum. While the console is still closed up, it is the best way to clear dust, and it is what we recommend too.
- Refit the covers, give the console its 10 cm of space and test it with the game that used to shut it off.
Why you shouldn’t repaste a PS5 yourself
Most overheating guides online tell you to replace the thermal paste, as if every console were an old PS4. The PS5 is different. In its own teardown of the console, Sony showed that the PS5 uses liquid metal, not paste, between the chip and the heatsink. Liquid metal moves heat very well, but it is a metal and it conducts electricity. If it escapes onto the parts around the chip, it can short them, and a cleaning job becomes a board repair.
That is why an overheating repair starts with a diagnosis. Depending on what we find, the work may involve cleaning the heatsink, servicing the fan or carefully restoring the liquid-metal interface. Thermal material must suit the console model. You get a clear quote before any work starts.
PS4 and Xbox: same problem, different insides
The PS4 and PS4 Pro use regular thermal paste, and after years of use it dries out. Combine that with a dusty fan and you get the famous PS4 jet-engine noise, followed by shutdowns. Unlike a PS5, a PS4 has no easy dust catchers, so a proper clean means opening it up.
Xbox Series X, Series S and Xbox One consoles tell the same story. Dust clogs the intake, the fan ramps up, and the console shuts down to protect itself. If yours still works but sounds like it’s about to take off, our Xbox deep clean strips it down, clears the dust, refreshes the thermal paste and checks the fan so it runs quiet and cool again.
When it’s time to bring it in
| What you’re seeing | What needs checking | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fan louder under load, then settles | Normal cooling | Nothing, it’s working as designed |
| Fan loud all the time, no shutdowns | Dust buildup or a cooling-system fault | Vacuum the vents and dust catchers; bring it in if it stays loud |
| Shuts off mid-game | Cooling, power and board faults | Give it 10 cm of space and vacuum the vents; bring it in if it keeps happening |
| Shuts off right away, or won’t power on | Power or board fault | Bring it in |
| Started after a drop, spill or move | Hardware damage | Bring it in |
Bring the console in and the diagnosis is free. We test it under load, find out whether it is dust, thermal material, the fan or the power side, and give you a clear quote before any work starts. Nothing begins until you say yes to the price. We confirm the expected turnaround with your quote. Repairs carry a 90-day warranty, parts and labour.

Frequently asked questions
Overheating is one possible cause, but power and board faults can also cause shutdowns. Check for a heat warning, blocked vents and poor ventilation. If it keeps switching off, have the fault diagnosed before choosing a cleaning or repair service.
The outside, yes. Sony’s own advice is to unplug the console and use a low-powered vacuum on the air vents, and the side covers come off by hand so you can reach the two dust catchers. Going further means taking the console apart, and that’s where the liquid metal is. Leave that part to a repair bench.
Either works. Sony’s guidance is about space, not orientation: keep at least 10 cm clear on every side, keep it off long-fibre carpet, and don’t squeeze it into a narrow cabinet. Use the appropriate feet or stand for your PS5 model so it sits flat and stable.
Yes, when diagnosis shows that the PS5 liquid-metal interface needs servicing. Liquid metal conducts electricity, so a spill can short the board. We confirm the work, parts availability and expected turnaround with your quote.
Cleaning and thermal servicing normally do not require erasing storage, but data cannot be guaranteed on a faulty console. Back up saves first if it still works, and tell us if preserving them is your priority. Storage or board faults need a separate assessment.
